Guildford International Music Festival 2007
What makes this Festival special?
World-famous names and international artists
Exhilarating, uplifting and engrossing musical events
Welcome
A very warm welcome to the ninth Guildford International Music Festival – an explosive fortnight of musical fireworks that only happens every two years. The Festival offers chances to hear amazing artists and music right here in the heart of Surrey, without having to travel to London or further afield. There are also some fascinating events that you just won't be able to see or hear anywhere else.
Take advantage of the Festival to sample something new and different and treat yourself to repertoire and performers that may be treasured and familiar.
With over 60 events there really is something to suit all musical tastes and all members of the family.
There are too many special events to highlight them all, but my personal favourites have to include the intriguing Sculpted Sound which kick starts the Festival, the incredible guitarists John Williams and John Etheridge; the outstanding Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; the Brodsky String Quartet; the award-winning dance company Srishti; Tinariwen the sensational rock/roots legends from the Sahara visit Guildford on the first night of a national tour; the ever-popular June Tabor; and the not-to-be-missed rousing Festival Finale with the London Contemporary Gospel Choir with a special gospel song for Guildford. But I also want to go and see Jazz Classics Revisited, the Big Guildford Gig, the Electric Factor, the concerts at Hatchlands Park and the Festival Guitar Day …to name but a few!
The Festival is always full of ‘firsts' and this year is no exception with world premieres, first performances and first showings of unusual concerts, such as Preludes which mixes visual art and music and Haxan , a dark and witty film from the 1920s about witchcraft with a live music score.
We don't often get the chance to have such world-famous names play in such intimate local venues, so if you want exhilarating and enjoyable nights out, buy your tickets today, as many Festival event s sell out very quickly and I'd hate you to miss out. It couldn't be simpler – read the brochure, choose your favourite event s, call the Box Office, book your tickets, then sit back, relax and enjoy the music! I hope you share my enthusiasm and have a wonderful time, whatever you choose.
