Exceptional instruments or sonic sculptures? Derek Shiel's unusual creations made from found objects are both, and have been the inspiration for new works by many international composers. These intriguing percussive sculptures are not only artistic artefacts, but produce incredible sounds which the composers and performers exploit thoroughly. The programme takes the spiritual setting of Guildford Cathedral as its starting point. The six new works are inspired by different faiths or religious influences. At the beginning and middle of the concert children from Guildford primary schools will present their own short pieces based on workshops that span art, literature, religious studies and music.
This is a performance in-the-round so that you can see what each musician is playing. Get there early to take a closer look at the instruments/sound sculptures and feel free to ask the composers and sculptor questions afterwards.
Associated opportunities for visually impaired people are associated with this event. Please visit the Festival website or contact the Festival administration on 01483 689690 for further details.
