A celebration of Chinese Arts featuring performances, family workshops ad interactive events


Brush Drawing and Calligraphy Demonstration Brush drawing

Chinese Brush techniques demonstration and Chinese artefacts will be on display in The Electric Theatre Foyer throughout the day, from 10.30 am. Experienced teacher, Li Xiaoyi will demonstrate her calligraphy and Chinese characters, and paint objects such as pandas, flowers and bamboo with traditional brush and ink.Free event logoChina Arts logo

Dance in the Dragon Spirit! A fun opportunity to learn the popular traditional dance with a fancy Dragon costume and rhythmic music. The dance will be performed before the lunchtime recital.

Chinese Music Family Workshop

Rhythm, percussion and voice

10.30am – 12noon

Come and learn Chinese rhythms and melodies. Bring your own instruments - violins, guitars, flutes, clarinets... or use the percussion instruments provided. If you haven't got an instrument, don't worry, your voice will be fine. The session will cover Chinese melody, song and rhythms with a short performance before the lunchtime recital. A playful introduction to the understanding and appreciation of Chinese music.

Workshop participants from events 4 – 5 will join together to present their work as part of the lunchtime performance.

Dr Cheng Yu , formerly soloist at the China Central Orchestra of Chinese Music in Beijing is an internationally renowned pipa virtuoso, currently teaching and researching at SOAS, University of London . The pipa is a fretted lute with 4 strings. A close relative of the European and Middle Eastern China Arts logolutes it came to China from central Asia via the Silk Road in the 4 – 5 th Centuries. Pipa music is famed for its unique richness of expression. Cheng Yu performs a selection of traditional and modern pieces giving an insight to this intriguing instrument and its music.

China 's string instruments were made with silk in ancient times - the inspiration for the Quartet's name. New in its form and style, unique in its instrumentation and presentation, the Silk String Quartet is the premier Chinese string ensemble in Europe and performs contemporary works, fresh interpretations of traditional music and cross-cultural music creations. A rare opportunity to hear the compelling soundscapes made by these wonderful instruments. China Arts logo

Two guitar greats come to Guildford for this special evening of classical, jazz, and world music. Australian, John Williams, known as the foremost ambassador of the guitar, is joined by John Etheridge, who has been at the top of the jazz and contemporary guitar world for 30 years. Alone they are awesome; together they combine amazing technique, powerful improvisation and an overwhelming passion for playing. John Williams plays classical guitar and John Etheridge electric and acoustic steel-string guitars in an enjoyable programme that defines cross-genre collaboration.
