Matthew Herbert - electronic composer

Lecture Recital

Event number: 20

University of Surrey, PATS Studio One, 4pm

Free

Restless innovator, sampling wizard, classically trained pianist and superstar collaborator, Matthew Herbert is one of electronic music's most versatile and prolific figureheads. An alchemist of avant-garde sound in the tradition stretching from Stockhausen to the Aphex Twin, Herbert combines playful pop sensibility with a strictly imposed experimental agenda. He has devised a personal manifesto which prohibits the use of any pre-recorded musical sources, as well as any synthetic Free events logosounds that imitate acoustic instruments. Accidental sounds or errors influence the process of his production, and he considers mistakes in programming or recording as the welcome intervention of random humanity in a sterile world!

Horses BrawlThe duo, Horses Brawl, are causing quite a stir with their original take on folk and early music. They play a mix of modern and ancient instruments including bowed guitar, double barrelled recorders, crumhorn solos and hurdy-gurdy. Their virtuosic and vivacious playing, combined with their info rmal stage manner draws a wide range of audiences into the fun. They have been compared to folk legends Carthy and Swarbrick and have been hailed by BBC Radio 3 as an early music group to keep an eye on … its great stuff .
