Looking back…

The Ninth Guildford International Music Festival in 2007 was an explosive fortnight of musical fireworks. The Festival offered chances to hear amazing artists and music in the heart of Surrey, without having to travel to London or further afield. There were also some fascinating events that you just wouldn’t be able to see or hear anywhere else.

With over 60 events there really was something to suit all musical tastes and all members of the family.

Highlights included the intriguing ‘Sculpted Sound’ which kick started the Festival, the incredible guitarists John Williams and John Etheridge; the outstanding Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; the Brodsky String Quartet; the award-winning dance company Srishti; Tinariwen the sensational rock/roots legends from the Sahara who visited Guildford on the first night of a national tour; the ever-popular June Tabor; and the rousing Festival Finale with the London Contemporary Gospel Choir with a special gospel song for Guildford. The Festival is always full of ‘firsts’ and 2007 was no exception with world premieres, first performances and first showings of unusual concerts, such as ‘Preludes’ which mixed visual art and music and ‘Haxan’, a dark and witty film from the 1920s about witchcraft with a live music score.
